Announcements & Sales Hey Guys, my name is Funky J. Monky,! you'll meet the customer service manager, Jimmy Kloun later. Welcome to the new Digital Vintage (sm), Funk & Junk's® latest acquisition! ANNOUNCEMENTS (Go to Sale)1/10/2010-We fully realize that we have been remiss in making regular announcements as of late but we have good reasons.Over the last months we have rededicated ourselves to inventory control and processing. The result is not only better organization of our 100,000's of items but also the ability to easily significantly fill or create new categories for our customers. A couple of notable additions and fills include: -Our Non-Sports trading card category to include some really great sets we have had in our warehouse for some time and represent their first offerings we've made to the public in and out of our now defunct retail locations. -The breaking out of our Vintage T-shirt category to make room for even more never before offered items from some great artists in our Concert and Tour T-shirt category (make sure you check out the same category on Funk & Junk®) -The vast expansion of our Action figures and Character Dolls category to include subcategories for, you guessed it, never before offered figures from our offline inventories. Most of these are carded figures but we also broke into our large Vintage GI Joe holdings to begin that category in earnest. Among the additional subcategories are The Tick, Johnny West, Kiss, Marvel Superheroes, the Beatles, the Simpsons and more. We've really just begun with the Action figure stuff so stay tuned. -We added a category for fine but Contemporary Jewelry, Gold and Precious and Semi-precious stones to allow for the listing of items from our Estate Sale services. Most of the initial items here are from a single, gigantic, Estate that will keep the category packed for some time to come. -In addition to the Jewelry, we also created a category for Coins & Paper Money with further subcategories. Again, the holdings of one of our latest Estates has the ability to keep these categories pretty robust. That will give you some idea of what we've been up to and why, for example, our "Ask Elle" appraisal feature was put on hiatus. It has yet to be determined if this feature will be reborn in any big way as we haven't told you all that's been going on or the plans for our site here and at Funk & Junk®. Finally, our Retail Manager who would normally pen these announcements has undertaken a huge site building task nearly on his own that we hope he will announce (and open to the public!) early this year. This site is not connected directly with Funk & Junk® or Digital Vintage but it is related. Stay tuned....we've had a peek and you'll like it! Now that we've caught you up to date on what's been keeping us busy here, we want to take a moment to reflect on 2009. Even during these difficult times, 2009 was a record year for us here at Funk & Junk® and the Holiday season broke all records in a big way. It is from the bottom of our hearts that we thank our customers old and new for supporting us in such a big way and when it was really needed. This year is no exception of course and in addition to the work we've mentioned we are going to continue to prove ourselves to be the best in our business in all aspects to warrant your continued support and loyalty. Because our customers have treated us so well since we made the full switch to online only sales and particularly this year, we have decided to continue our automatic discounting policy on the vast majority of our items (only excludes the lowest of priced items). At this point we have no plans of discontinuing this policy and it has gone well passed our initial initial evaluation period that started roughly 3 years ago when we closed our last retail store to exclusively sell online. Please don't take the lack of activity here at our announcements board as an indication that we aren't working for you, it is quite the contrary but we will also try to keep you more up to date on the activities here as we rededicate ourselves to transforming our sites yet again. This time it is not in terms of functionality as it was in years past but rather in terms of customer support and providing the best and largest inventory offerings while covering all of our customers interests and tastes. Once again, thank you for your great support that enables us to continue to work in the business and with the people we love so much. 9/1/2009-We're on a roll, check for our stuff on the back of Mr. Brown himself of "Meet the Browns" on TBS! 8/18/2009-If your in the Kansas City area and frankly even if your not then make sure you check out Barry Williams (Yes!, "our" Greg Brady!) in the upcoming Musical Comedy "Church Basement Ladies 2 - A Second Helping". You may recognize him wearing our Cool threads! Groovy Barry, Groovy. 5/24/2008-Sorry it's been so long since we passed along some news! We've actually been so busy all of this time that keeping in touch feel through the cracks. Shame on us! Well, there has been a lot going on so here are a few brief highlights. First, we have now finally fully integrated our Book Review and "Ask Elle" appraisal feature into the new site structure and both features have begun to blossom again and you stay on the site when your doing some fun reading. We apologize that new material was slow in coming during this process. The good news is except to upgrades and tweaks we are finally done with the move to the new site. It's surprising how long it takes to get things right! Of course, there are a lot of things that you as our customers don't see that go towards growing our businesses (remember, we own Digital Vintage too!) that at least recently have taken the most work. These types of things let those who don't already know we're here find us when they are looking for our Collectibles, Vintage Clothing or articles and appraisals. The end result, we think, is a site with great functionality that is not bloated by movies, java popups, music you may or may not want to hear and other often disruptive elements that we believe don't have their place on a site such as ours. We have always felt that it's our STUFF that you come to see and we want that experience to be a smooth one without annoyances. Remember, we buy stuff too so our design decisions are based on both good and bad experiences and sites we have visited. Judging by our ever rising visitors and sales we think our work was more than worthwhile. Of course it is you, our customers, who have the last say and you show it through your support so always feel free to let us know if something bugs you or if you think we're missing something. No matter how big we get, we will not repeat the mistake of other sites in the past (see below for the most relevant site making these mistakes!), we're here for and because of YOU! Secondly, though we will from time to time continue to sell items through auction on Ebay, we have essentially left. One of the reasons (and there are many!) we "left" Ebay is due to the fact that they appear to use every piece of technology and software code available on the Internet whether it makes sense or not. Additionally, when they make changes they never test functionality and usually break something that has been running fine for years. As an example, they added multiple Java pop-up windows in the seller form (which is annoying and unnecessary) and broke the automatic out of U.S. USPS insurance calculator making our job of offering to non-U.S. buyers all that much harder. All of our reports went unanswered and it was a final straw for us since their customer support has also gone even further down hill than it already had for many years and Ebay appeared to not recognize who generated the income for everyone (it's the seller if you can't guess!). Lastly, our recent transition to online only sales has provided us the time necessary to really dig into our huge warehouse of stuff. Not only does it mean that we are much more organized then we ever have been but also that we are getting a look at many thousands of items that have been essentially buried for years. Plus, the integration of Digital Vintage's inventory puts all of the Vintage Clothing in one place so we can hand pick future offerings from the wealth of items. These finds have provided not only many high quality items to post in our already numerous established categories but also for the creation of new categories and sub-categories. We previously mentioned our expanded Action Figure selection and since then we have also started our Vintage Pez dispenser category and, most recently, a Children's Vintage clothing category on Digital Vintage! We're excited most about the Kid's Vintage stuff. This is an area of vintage that is not only extremely rare (mostly for the normal kid wearing reasons!) but also offered by only a very small handful of dealers. We believe we are a step ahead of even those few since at least the first building block to this category features Deadstock (unused!) Boy's shirts from the 1960's and 1970's. By the way, these styles mirror their adult counterparts and generally are not over the top in terms of design so your kid will only look stylish. Phew! That should get you guys caught up and then some. We want to take yet another opportunity to pass along our sincere gratitude for your support. Words can't do it justice! 12/25/2007-Time again for our famous Funk & Junk® "What the #!*% was Santa Thinking? Sale" It's time to pick up the slack for Santa. He's done so much for us that it's the least we can do. In addition to our discount pricing policy that offers great discounts already, until 12/31/2007 we're taking off an additional 5% off EVERYTHING! Since our discount pricing only applies to items over $20, nows your chance to even get further discount on all of those items as well. Just find the items you want, you'll see the discount! It's our way of thanking not only Santa but our customers who keep us in the business we love. We really appreciate your support! 11/11/2007-Check out our vastly expanded and organized Action Figure section! We've just added many items from some classic lines that to date haven't been heavily featured on our site. Specifically, and most recently, GI Joe 12" figures and accessories and Johnny West / Best of the West figures and accessories. Most of these items are staff held ones that have remained in the private collections for years (some since they were originally released!). Look for similar offerings soon from some equally well known lines such as Mego, Barbie, He-Man, Action Jackson and more. Opening our Retail Manager's and Associates private collections for sale is part of our new focus on our now strictly online businesses. These items are more often than not classic toys of some type and usually highly sought after. The problem was that they were too tightly coveted by the owners themselves! It's the final step to becoming true dealers in our field and not an easy step to take. We've had a meeting of the minds and now trust that we can pass along these items to new collectors who will love them as much as we have while we focus completely on finding new items. Our expansion isn't stopping there either as we continue to organize to make your searching easier while loading up all of our popular categories to bursting. We've also got new categories in the works too so keep checking for your favorite Collectibles! 11/2/2007-See if you can tell what stuff is ours on an upcoming episode of "Desperate Housewives". We wont give it away but we think it will be obvious. 7/9/2007-We know it's been a while since you've heard from us but believe us when we say we've been busy! Now the sites, http://www.funkandjunk.com & http://www.digitalvintage.com, are pretty much running themselves so we've been able to get back to work. In addition to getting hundreds of more items up on both sites during this period we have also taken on a large estate that includes some things we thought many or you might be interested in. This estate is from a long time collector and many/most of the items are things that we don't usually search for or list on our site so many of the items are going to be posted on our Ebay auctions in the interest of getting the most for the estate by attracting buyers that we might not have on a regular basis here. To be brief there are lots of sports items with many autographed and/or limited edition items. We have a couple of dozen autographed baseballs and other photos, cards and plaques. Boxes and packs of unopened sports cards along with uncut sheets and lots more sports stuff. There is also a HUGE amount of coins of all types. These include many uncirculated mint sets, state quarters in all metals, Chinese Gold and Silver coins, Russian Silver and Palladium coins, Morgan dollars and lots more. These are the two biggest categories but there are also good advertising items, stamps, first day covers, trains and more. Additionally, for you local (Alexandria, Va.) folks, we will be having a local estate sale sometime soon that we will announce on the site so keep your eyes open as it will happen either at the end of July or early August. The mentioned items will be sold both on Ebay as well as at the estate sale so if you can check them both out you should. 4/20/07-Finally we make it into the 21st (ok, at least the 20th! ) Century with our new web site. We've focused on function and customer service first with this work in progress. Here's a few of the things you can expect:
Along with that we will listen to any comments and suggestions you might have and if they make sense (and we can technically do it!), we'll implement them. Our goal is to match the quality of our items and values to the ease with which you can find and buy them. 2/9/07-We're happy to now offer "toll free" phone service to many of our customers. The quotes are only for those who may have super restrictive calling plans and 99.9999% of you should now be able to call us without any toll charges! We look forward to hearing from you 1/21/07-Here's a word from our Retail Manager about our brand new category - Vintage Magic Tricks and Magician Items: Hi everyone. These Magic tricks and related items are from my personal collection. Though I've been selling Antiques and Collectibles for too many years to mention I still have a ways to go to become a full fledged "dealer". Becoming a dealer is one of the hardest things for a collector to do. It means you have to be willing to part with your stuff! Despite selling many of my truly loved items, there are a few collections that I still have a tough time parting with. This year I'm breaking all sorts of new ground and this represents a big step for me from a dealer standpoint. I was into magic since I was about 8 or 9 years old. By then I was already a card carrying member of Al's Magic Club and his shop in Washington D.C., along with Al himself (who, is still dazzling them to this day!) are one of a handful of shops/personas that gave birth to the ideology of our business today. When Doug Henning created a magic boom in the early 1970's I hit the road and performed my magic act for Boy Scout jamborees, Carnivals and the like. Since I was already a collector then I combined the two passions/illnesses and have amassed a considerable collection of tricks, stage apparatus, books, ephemera and the like. Many of these items were Vintage/Antique when I bought them and your unlikely to find these on the market today since the few others that may be floating out there are in the clutches of Magicians who are just as unlikely to release them from their libraries. Call it becoming a dealer, call it therapy, whatever - you win regardless 12/26/06-Normally we would have our annual "What the $#@*$$ was Santa Thinking" sale but since we just recently made the transition to strictly online sales, we've decided to go one better...and longer! We have now instituted discounts across the board! This includes every item at Funk & Junk® and Digital Vintage! Every item listed (over $20) and every new item listed will automatically be discounted from 10-15%. Here's how we're doing it. We will continue to price at our same low, highly competitive, price structure but prior to downloading our online databases all prices will automatically be discounted. They will be discounted with a rounding program to keep the prices "neat", hence the range of discounts. Total discounts were close to $30,000 with an average discount of 13%. Additionally, we will continue to have sales from time to time so your savings will just keep racking up. We are now dedicated solely to you guys as our customer base and this is our way of saying thanks for the support that got us to this transitional point AND thanks for continuing to buy from us (HINT! HINT!). Currently we have no plans on removing the new discounted prices but they are subject to reversion back to our normal already low retail prices at any time. Should there be any discrepancies, our offline database prices always take precedence over online prices. 9/30/06-With our upcoming move to strictly online sales we've changed our return policy. It's super liberal but subject to change if too many abuses take place. We encourage all of our customers to ask as many additional questions as they need to prior to ordering. Though we pride ourselves on our complete descriptions and sizing information, we are always happy to send additional information or take that weird measurement that always causes you a problem when buying clothing. Of course this, and all policies, apply to Digital Vintage (sm) sales as well. 8/25/06-We will be closing our Alexandria, Virginia Retail shop (don't panic...not our online businesses!) sometime in late October 2006. 7/13/2006-Our Retail shop will be closed July 20-23. With our new hours this means that we are closed the full week from July 17th through, and including, July 23rd. 4/29/2005-Mystery Celebration Sale!!!! Our biggest sale in 12 years and not likely to be repeated. Nothing held back! 3/18/2005-We are proud the announce the acquisition of Digital Vintage (sm), a fantastic Vintage Clothing site. With this merger comes a wealth of fantastic Vintage Clothing in equally fantastic condition. In addition to the current posted inventory of about 400 pieces, Digital Vintage has been in the game for a long time and their warehouse inventory almost rivals ours. What this means to you is an ample supply of superb condition clothing and accessories for both Men and Women. Please feel free to order from either site. 12/26/04-We have stopped the practice of sending out our Christmas card as of this year but not our sale. Please accept our best wishes for the Holidays by joining us for our traditional "Santa's clueless!" sale. 11/5/04-Phew!, lots of technical issues on this end and we apologize for the few days you couldn't find us. Thanks for coming back! For the hassle we have super charged our Anniversary sale to make amends. This year marks our 12th year Anniversary this month at our current retail location and 9th year Web Anniversary. Not only will the sale be on EVERYTHING we have but the discount is bigger than we've ever offered! For 27 years in business we've always had the best customers around and we hope you stick with us for another couple of decades or so (at least). All values are before shipping/applicable taxes. 5/14/04-We've just completed over 250 price reductions in all categories. Some have been listed with today's update but make sure you check out items you may have been interested in but couldn't afford. Price reductions will continue in most categories so check items often. 5/8/04-More price reductions! - All records within the record category have just been reduced by 20%. 4/3/04-TIVO alert! Check out our retail manager, Jeff, on "The Early Show" on CBS Tuesday April 13th. We wont give away the subject but suffice to say that if you like us, you'll love the spot! Ok, since it has already aired we can tell you that the piece was on Lunch Boxes and the Smithsonian traveling exhibit. 3/16/04-We have to count our blessings yet again! We just purchased 100+ 1970's men's shirts. Styles run mostly towards the more popular "out there" patterns but there are a few of the crisp standard stylings as well. We will be posting some of these shirts shortly and more will be exhibited at our retail location. 12/9/03-Did you catch our retail manger, Jeff, on National Public radio? Despite the tiny sound bite they choose (to be fair they talked with him only minutes before broadcast so they were rushed and were amazed at their ability to get it on the air at all!) Jeff had a lot to say on the subject of the validity of online auction results as means for pricing objects. Suffice to say that you can get a better handle on his outlook on price guides in general by reading some of his price guide reviews. As always, Jeff is happy to comment on all subjects related to our business and welcomes follow-ups. 12/9/03-Our regular customers may have noticed that we didn't send out our Christmas card this year. Even though there has been a lot of activity and improvements which we always like to tell you about, we simply haven't had the time. However, this doesn't mean that we are stopping the tradition of our "Insiders Sale". Same deal as last year with but we're adding and additional 5% off for a total of 15% off everything we've got (even items marked "no sale ever") since we couldn't wish you a Merry Christmas in person. The sale will run from 12/9/03 to 12/23/03. We've added a week but keep in mind you probably wont get items in time for Christmas if you order later in the span. This sale is for past customers only. Hey!, we've extended the sale to 1/8/04! 2/22/03-Due to the overwhelming popularity of our"Window Shopper"sm feature, we have unveiled another new feature ahead of schedule. Our latest feature is our Collector book reviews of all the latest books on collecting, Antiques, Collectibles, Pop Culture and the like. Lots of price guides will be reviewed but there will be many other types of books as well. Just another way of us saying thanks for all your support over these many years, enjoy! 12/14/02-We've just posted our brand new feature, the "Window Shopper"sm!. Here you'll find our latest pictures in gallery form for you to browse (and buy!). We will update this feature on a regular basis but in between updates some items might sell and this will be noted if you click on that item for purchase information. As always, we need your feedback to tell us how you like it and any suggestions for changes to make it easier. 5/25/02-To add greatly to our fast new server, we have finally added a multiple word search. We will be in a short testing period to work out any kinks and we would appreciate any comments towards improving the search and results page. 1/6/02-O.K. ladies, it's your turn. We just finished negotiations for yet another lot of deadstock clothing. We have been soooooo lucky within the last year and this makes the fifth such find and this one is the smallest! Despite out luck, this kind of happening in this day and age is unheard of. Granted this lot is much smaller than our last men's lot of what turned out to be close to 4000 pieces but it's great stuff never the less. Total initial count is close to 600 pieces with mostly blouses of all types from the 60's, 70's and even some 80's classics. There is also a handful of slacks, vests, purses, knee-high socks and jackets. We will begin filtering the lot through our retail shop and on the site as soon as we can. Next update will feature some random examples so check it out. Most pieces still have the original tags so don't miss this opportunity to be the first owner. 9/21/01 - We will be donating 20% of Gross Sales towards Relief Fund(s) for at least all sales (both in-store and on the site) from 9/21/2001-9/23/2001. It is expected that this period will be extended for a longer period. We not only urge everyone to contribute in some way to help out (eg. give blood, donate to various funds, etc.) but we also make that plea that you continue to help the economy as a whole not suffer. No one should feel any guilt for buying what some might mistakenly call "frivolous" such as dinner out , a cool knick-knack or a new piece of clothing but, on the contrary, it is necessary that everyone continue to spend and invest in a normal manner. You don't have to buy from us, just buy! Failure to do so simply feeds the desired results of the terrorists by degrading our economy as a whole. These results have already become very obvious to not only Wall Street but to local economies. 9/12/01 - Funk & Junk® would like to take a moment to express their sincere condolences to the family and friends of all of those tragically lost during the recent terrorist attacks. In addition to the innocent lives lost in both cities and in the sky, this includes the all too often under thanked Police, Fireman, Rescue workers and other similar personnel who put their lives on the line and all too often tragically lose them in their gallant and completely unselfish attempts to save other lives. They are nothing less than heroes who continue their tireless efforts despite the proven danger and risk. Our thoughts are with you all during these impossibly difficult times. 6/2/01 - PRICE REDUCTIONS! We have just filtered through a great deal of our Site posted inventory and have reduced hundreds of prices so check any items you've been longing for since they may be cheaper. We are still hashing through the huge list so look for more reductions in the near future as well. 3/26/01 - After a long negotiation we have finally closed a near once in a lifetime deal. We have purchased the entire contents of a fine men's shop from the 60's and 70's. After many years in business the owner literally locked his doors in the late 70's and went into retirement. To make a long story short, we purchased over 3000 deadstock pieces (most with original tags and packaging) that include:
Please note: Since many shirts are packaged, we will guarantee the noted size (e.g. medium is 15-15.5 neck) and will take returns ONLY if these measurements do not jive. 3/4/01 - Our retail shop will be closed on Monday (3/12) and Tuesday (3/13). All site orders/requests will also be delayed by one day. 12/1/00 - Good God! We're helping to shape the minds of tomorrow. See our stuff in National Geographic "A Suburban Community of the 1950s" reader for grades 3-6. Heaven help us all! 11/1-12/31 - Anniversary sales, different sale everyday this month! (extended through December 31st!) 9/26/00 - See if you can find our stuff in the upcoming Stephen King film currently filming in Baltimore. 5/25/00 - We will be on hand to field your appraisal questions at the upcoming "Great Gadsby's (Tavern) Antique Appraisal Fair" (g2a3) July 21-23, 2000. We will be available for the Saturday evening session between 3:30 - 5:30 though other appraisers will be available during the other times. Our listed specialties are Pop Culture Collectibles and Vintage Clothing. Details on the event can be found at http://g2a3.home.att.net/ though it is still in the planning stages so we will keep you updated. We are volunteers and proceeds go to benefit the Gadsby's Museum Society. 3/19/00 - Hey!, This month Today's Collector magazine has selected our site as one of the best out of a total published of less than 40 on the entire Web! Thanks to everyone for making us one of the best! Make sure you pick up the May issue for a special pull-out guide to the best of the Web. 8/13/99 - Well, we've been telling you about our items featured in the new Kiss movie for months and now it's finally out. Check out "Detroit Rock City" and see if you can spot our items!
